AF Convertible vs. Dragonfly2?

Post by Mary Bruemmer » Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:12 am

We are interested in purchasing 2 tandem kayaks for our family and are trying to decide between the AF convertible and/or the Dragonfly2. We have to 2 adults and 2 children (7 and 10 years old). We may sometimes want to go solo as well. We plan to do lakes and gentle rivers, day trips only. Do you have any recommendations?

Af Convertible or DF2?

It seems that from other comments that have been posted here, the AF Convertible is better suited for 2 paddlers than for 1. It seems that when paddled solo, it is less easy to handle. If all four of you are going kayaking at the same time, why not get 2 DragonFly 2's - 1 for mom and dad and the other for the children. If you are going solo, the DragonFly 2 would, it would seem, be the better choice.

Actually, when paddling the tandem kayaks solo, the best choice would be the Convertible. You are able to sit in the middle of the kayak so that your weight is evenly distributed throughout the kayak. Granted it is more weight to paddle around solo than the Dragonfly2 but you will get better performance out of it then paddling the Dragonfly2. If you paddle the Dragonfly2 solo, you need to paddle from the rear seat in the kayak which lifts the bow of the kayak a little, giving less performance. To keep the bow down more, you need to put weight (gear or ballast) in the front of the kayak.
If you are worried about cost and/or weight of the kayak then the Dragonfly2 is the lesser of the two. It weighs ess and costs less. If you are not worried about price and/or weight, then the Convertible will give you the best overall performance.
