The “rigidityâ€￾ I speak of is resistance to the gunwales being spread apart. The only thing putting tension on them is the deck (if installed) or the Velcro of the thwart. I got the idea when we were running sans deck and my wife went to adjust her seating position and pushed the gunwales apart from the thwart. I figured tying the gunwales together might be an idea and tried it out. It works great.

Simple. Just long enough to reach across the boat from buckle to buckle.

New AE Convertible Accessory Idea

We have found that the AE Convertible loses a significant amount of rigidity in the mid section when paddling without the deck. As a science project we wrapped a strap (from the kayak cart) around the mid section of the boat where the thwart is. What a difference. After that experiment we acquired (...

The convertible is perfect for small statured people. In fact you don't want to be too tall for it.

Spray skirts only work while one is in the boat and they remain attached to the combing. Trying to keep water out is a good thing but once inside it needs to be dealt with.

Pumping Out Water

We've had our boat for a couple of years now and have been getting our money's worth. We've been in salt water, fresh water, rivers, lakes, and enjoyed it a lot. This last trip we had the enjoyment of dealing with surf. On a couple of occasions we took on quite a bit of water. No big deal, we have d...

We just started doing this recently carrying our AE convertible with backbone on top of a vehicle to get from camp site to water. I used two tie downs and the bow line to secure it at the front. We didn't drive faster than 25MPH and all was fine.

Frank,
If being miserable while wet is an issue, wear synthetic clothing. Synthetic shirt under your life vest, synthetic undies (like Underarmour) under synthetic pants (like REI convertibles). You will dry out much quicker.

I'm a noob here. Just got my AF convertible last fall and had her (Dreadnought is the name) out last weekend for sea trials (on lakes). We loved it. I also am interested in carrying cargo in the center between occupants. The above noted link is dead. I seem to recall that AE used to sell tie down po...
