Do people typically carry the pump on board with them when they kayak?
It doesn't' do much good to have a patch kit on board if you don't have a pump.
What is the usual practice?
Am I a fool if I paddle down a river without a pump on board

I have a small clamshell air pump and also a small doublestroke pump, as well as the big doublestroke pump used to inflate the kayak. Often I carry one of the small pumps with me. When I decide not to carry an air pump, it's only because I'm in a familiar place where I'd be okay swimming to shore.
I always carry a bilge pump, and a throw bag with a floating rope stuffed in it. Sometimes I carry a sponge or a bailer (plastic bottle with the bottom cut off) if I'm loaning the bilge pump to a friend in another kayak.

Seems i have a punture repair kit but do not carry an air pump.
The punture outfit without a pump i am thinking is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
I am now thinking some of the paddling trips i make are a fair distance.
I have the pump stowed in the car that i should have thought was not the best place to keep it.
So I will invest in a small foot pump that i can carry under the rear deck.
